Fanboys…the only movie I’m really looking forward to this Fall.

Ah, the Fall. Usually the best films of the year come out around this time to stay fresh in the minds of the Academy when it comes their time to vote for the best of in numerous categories, all in hopes to be named the best of the year. This is the time of year when the thought provoking films, the meaningful emotional ventures of the human soul, and the truly brilliant films of originality grace the screen, all vying for one position; best film.
It’s this time of year I look forward to most of all. Yes, I do enjoy some Summer films, this Summer much more than previous years (films like Iron Man, Dark Knight, 21, Wall-E, Kung Fu Panda, and a few others were pleasant surprises) but it all comes down to the Fall and early Winter periods where films truly shine. This year is no acception.
There are some brilliant looking films coming out and other that look painfully obvious that they are only trying to be worthy of an Academy Award. Allow me to quickly explain this: A “safe” film is one that really doesn’t try to make the art medium (film) a better, more progressive community by creating new ideas or experimenting with story telling. These are the films that are viewed by the pretentious film crowd as “worthy” of their attention, and the non-film crowd sees them at the awards and says, “I never heard of that movie, WTF?” And even though, sometimes, these films are worth watching and dragging your emotions through, most of the time they are nothing but tripe-filled excuses for attempting to win an award, instead of creating marvelous characters and allowing us to witness a glimpse of their lives.
Characters are the defining aspect of what grabs you in a film. You have to be able to relate, like, or simply just attach your emotions to the characters you are watching, or else everything is for naught. This is why Dark Knight worked so damn well, and everyone I know said the exact same thing, “Why even have Batman in the movie, let’s call it Joker Begins.”
But I am digressing severely.
There are a few films coming out soon that I will wandering from my abode to go and witness in the theater. Movies such as: The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Burn After Reading, Bolt, W., and a few others. But none so much as the much anticipated Fanboys. If you are unfamiliar with this movie, please go type in “Fanboys” in Google and read about the year or so controversy of the film and the thousands and thousands of fans that have made it possible for this movie to be released with the original scripted story, instead of the Miramax rewrite that completely changed the mood of the film into a slock-fest comedy something clonable from Road Trip or Harold and Kumar.
I am not dissing either of these two films, I actually enjoy them both (the 1st Harold, the 2nd was fucking terrible). I am quite looking forward to this movie for several reasons: 1, The story looks pretty fun, 2, it’s about Star Wars fans, 3, the cameos in the film are insane, 4, the fans won the battle and got to keep the film in it’s original story, damning the “man” and getting what was meant to be out and available to the masses.
With such a shitty run recently in the Star Wars Universe (The Prequels, The animated Clone Wars CG movie, tons of crap merchandising, and more), I think this will bring back the fans to why they love it and why they go crazy for it. Plus, and probably more importantly, this film will not just pander to the SW fans, but to any one who ever had a friend, a shared dream, and wanted nothing but the best for them. I am hoping this movie will be amazing.
