Movie News (Dec 4th)

Published by junkfx at 6:52 am under Movie News Edit This

We all know by now that the arguably most influential Japanese animated film of all time, Akira, is being remade into a live action American travesty. Why do I say travesty? Has anyone watched the remakes recently vomiting out of Hollywood’s asshole? Granted, I do have hope. I own Akira on 3 different version VHSs, 2 different version DVDs, a Japanese Laser Disc, and the Criterion Collection Laser Disc. Suffice to say… I love the movie. But far be it from me to not take jest in the American remake… Obviously someone else has as well. Here is a comedic look at the American remake of Akira.

New screen shots have surfaced over at Spoiler TV.

Fans of the HBO smash hit, ROME, will be happy to know that creator Bruno Heller is wanting to do a follow up to Rome as a theatrical film. Despite getting many awards, many more viewers, and an over all beautiful film-like presence (the estimated budget for season 1 was $100 million) the show, along with many like it, was canceled in the middle of it’s 2nd season.

Ben Stiller has been quoted as saying he wants to make a Zoolander 2:

“I’ve been trying to get Zoolander 2 together and we’ve had a few scripts. I feel that is the sequel I really would like to do some day because I like the original and I would make sure it was something new and worthy of it first.”

While a terrible news story has surfaced saying that a Speed 3 is being shopped around hollywood with Dennis Hopper reprising his role as Howard Payne…and what’s this? Officer Jack Traven is in the treatment…meaning that this script would imply that Keanu Reeves would be reprising his role as well. Thank you. Hollywood. Yes, this is what we want. sigh.

“While making an appearance on a Sydney morning show, director George Miller has confirmed that he is no longer involved with Warner Bros’ Justice League movie in any capacity,” according to Dark Horizons.

Tron 2, the sequel to Tron (for those not paying attention since there aren’t any pictures), was previously called TR2N…is now being called TR2.

Rob Zombie may return to direct a follow-up to his 2007 film “Halloween”. Pre-production commences in January with shooting to start sometime in March. Tyler Mane is expected to be backs as Michael Myers. Zombies’s “Tyrannosaurus Rex” is apparently now on hold…”

“Transporter 2″ director Louis Leterrier claims he shot that sequel with Statham’s Frank Martin character as gay - “If you watch the movie and you know he’s gay, it becomes so much more fun.”

Criterion just launched a new website where you can virtually rent movies on your computer and if you decide to buy the DVD, the payment of that rental goes toward the price of purchase. You can also buy select titles on Blu Ray as well.

Planet of the Apes sequel…er, prequel…er…What the hell is going on?
20th Century Fox has hired writer/director Scott Frank to develop a new story based on the Planet of the Apes lineage. And for a while now sources have been saying it was going to be a remake of Conquest of the Apes, calling it Genesis:Apes. But apparently, this isn’t the case.

The film is being worked on under the working title “Caesar”. Fox’s Tom Rothman says that it is “a kind of prequel story before the first story, with a return to the social thematics that mark the first one, but with an entirely contemporary setting - Earth 2009.” SlashFilm says, “[t]he film won’t have talking monkeys and will not end with chimps taking over Earth. Instead the film will be a hard science fiction film about humans that use science to create hyper-intelligent chimpanzees.”
